To demystify the astronomical research that takes place at its West Texas facility, McDonald Observatory launched the What Are Astronomers Doing? website in April 2003. The site features research project descriptions that change on a weekly basis, astronomer bios, telescope pictures and facts, and a glossary.

"Doug's suggestions during our planning meetings really helped the team envision the final product. It was essential that the team have a way to interact with the site to share resources, and Doug has done a great job in providing them. The editing tools have been a joy to use — easy to navigate. The site itself is a joy to use."
— Dr. Mary Kay Hemenway, research associate (McDonald Observatory)
